Lebanon Crisis again…

Revised: August 2, 2006

Im just going to quote from the bbc… because I am too angry at Israel and its stupidly devistating raping of Lebanon.

This is the first time Israel has sent ground troops so far into Lebanon during the offensive.

Correspondents say the move has destroyed the slight mood of optimism in Lebanon that diplomatic efforts to bring about a ceasefire following the deadly strike on the village of Qana, in which 54 civilians died, were gathering momentum.

About 750 people - mainly civilians - have been killed by Israeli action in Lebanon, according to Lebanon's health minister.

A total of 54 Israelis, including at least 19 civilians, are known to have been killed by Hezbollah.

_41952228_oldladyapok.jpgThe United Nations now estimates that up to 900,000 have been displaced in Lebanon but many civilians are still trapped in villages and towns on the frontline.

The Israelis shelled the town into rubble.

In the ruins of houses we found old people trapped by the fighting. One woman was desperate for water.

There were no rescue workers in this part of town so it fell to journalists to carry them out to the ambulances.

Two armies fighting have bombed this town back to the Stone Age and it's happened in the 21st Century.

It's happened in spite of the existence of the United Nations, in spite of the promises made to civilians that they will be protected during time of war.

For the people of Bint Jbeil there was no protection at all.

Baalbek - home to perhaps the most impressive ancient Roman ruins outside Italy - is now very much Hezbollah country.

As a result, the area has been heavily bombed by Israel in the last three weeks, though it lies more than 100km (60 miles) from Israel's northern border and poses no threat as a rocket launching area.

_41951144_oilslickgrab_203.jpgAn oil slick caused by Israeli bombing of the Jiyyeh power station now covers 80km (50 miles) of coast.

Almost as much oil may have entered the water as during the 1989 Exxon Valdez tanker incident in Alaska, which led to widespread ecological damage.

The incident began with Israeli raids on the Jiyyeh power utility 30km (19 miles) south of Beirut between 13 and 15 July.

The green turtle, whose eggs hatch in July, is an endangered species.

Unep agrees that the oil is a significant threat to some Mediterranean wildlife, but also says the slick could compromise livelihoods when the current conflict ends.

"Firstly our thoughts are with the suffering of the civilian population," said Mr Steiner.

"But we must be concerned about the short and long term impacts on the marine environment, including the biodiversity upon which so many people depend for their livelihoods and living via tourism and fishing."

Just included snippets, click on the source links to be taken to the actuall articles. Isreals actions have made me angry with them, the recklessness of their actions and the amounting "collateral damage" is rediculous. If they had any morals at all they would ceasefire until peacekeepers can be sent in. Oh and dont even get me started on the consept of "peace keepers". A peacekeeping force in my eyes in one that has ultimate authority over all others, and one that doesn't take a month just to get onto the drawing board!
