Revised: September 12, 2006Some stupid guy who goes by the name coffinman on youtube stated that the moon landings where fake because nothing can survive traveling though the van allen radiation belts. This is a case of gross ignorance to the scientific process. The radiation that can be found in the van allen belts is mostly alpha radiation, high energy electrons which can be blocked by a few millimeters of stiff card, the rest is beta radiation, high energy protons which can be blocked by a few millimeters of metal.
Although the concentrations of both raditation in the van allen belts can pose a risk to human life unless shielded, the suits the astronauts wear have ample enough shielding to protect them from the radiation. This is because the particles within the van allen belts are only capable of penetrating about 1 g/cm2 of shielding which is equivalent to 1mm of lead.
Next thing coffinman will be saying is the Earth is flat… *roll eyes*
