Freshwater Fishkeeping
Revised: July 29, 2008For a long while one of my favourite hobbies is to keep tropical freshwater fish, not only do they fascinate me but they are really pretty to photograph and next to marine tropical freshwater fish are easy to look after. Above you can see my tank in its current state, I have ten neons in there of various breeds several catfish and a yellow Gourami.
But my tank hasn’t always looked like this, only three weeks ago it was so dirty you couldn’t see if any fish where in it, the light wasn’t working properly and the only fauna to be seen was algae feeding off the rotting remnant of the plants which had once thrived. Once I had finished cleaning it out (I really wish I had taken a before photo) I noticed two fish of the original twenty that had survived, a singing catfish and a golden gourami. After a thorough water change with treated tap water I began to stock the tank up with plants and replaced the three year old tube with a brand new one which gave an immediate boost of luminance. That was a couple of weeks ago and over the past two days I have begun introducing new fish, I now have two flying fox catfish, six neon tetras and four flame tetras. It has gone well so far and I am now looking to getting some cardinals because they are pretty.
