Tumblr Reblogging Addiction.

I am sure if you can be addicted to the internet then you can be addicted to reblogging on tumblr, I have spent the past hour looking through my dashboard and reblogging all that I have found informative or interesting.

While I am quite tempted to fill this post with photos of just swings and roundabouts, that will have to wait until another day. Instead I am going to rant a little here about the amount of noisy feedback within the blogosphere and inherent lack of referencing within the same domain. See the above photo for example it is a really nice black and white shot of a female form within a blurry urban scene and I would be interested in finding out who took the shot to write a little more here about them and their work. However this is not possible unless my source list their source and then only if that source is the original location. I don’t have all the links I followed to get the above image but it is a good example of the noise on the Internet being that I originally found it on one tumblr post which linked to a weheartit page which linked me to yet another tumblr post. This post then didn’t reference where it got it from which left me at a dead end, it was only by chance that I discovered the same image on vi.sualize.us because it had been linked from yet another tumblr post. A useful feature of vi.sualize.us is that they also show other websites that link to the same photo and within that list was a post at ffffound. It was there that I finally received a flickr link, it was to the photo rather than the page but using one of the online tools the final source can be found. The photographer is Sasha Nikitin and from looking at her photo stream on flickr she has a nice portfolio of work. I shall be revisiting this and some more of her photography over the coming weeks in one of the photographer features.

The next few weeks are going to go blazingly fast, fuelled by coffee and imagination I am in the throws of finishing my third however not final year of university life, as such I have had to cut down on the amount of time I spend on photogabble while Judy’s posts will undoubtfully outnumber my own the photography that goes with them will be my own, I just don’t have time to invest in writing full reports on things for the time being other than my own essays and papers relating to academic work. Below are some photos that interested me today, sources are listed where found otherwise they are from unknown parts of the internet.

Things I need to get done asap:

Finish tumblr theme
Update and publish tumblr plugin
Update and publish zenphoto plugin set
Finish final project for university
Write a paper on firefly and the themes contained within
Write a paper discussing and criticizing the medias representation/construction of “international terrorism”
Finally get round to finishing Doom III

And I have until the end of May to get that all done!

The state of tumblr…

I am writing this as a follow up to a tumblr post I submitted a few weeks ago titles “Say No to long tumblr posts“, in hind sight it wasn’t the most appropriate title quite simply because that wasn’t the point I was attempting to put across and with the increasing number of comments related to it I feel it’s in my best interest if I explain myself.

So far as I understand it tumblr began as a micro-blogging platform growing up in the same pond as the likes of twitter. The one thing that makes tumblr stand out is that its posts are organized based upon type of content rather than arbitrary categories and/or tags. This appealed to me and upon signing up I began to figure out how to innovativly utilize this new online “tool”. I eventually decided upon using it as another distribution point for my blog as recently I had been posting just images or very short text only posts and didn’t want them clogging up or distracting from the interesting article posts so these short posts would go on tumblr and everything else would go on the blog. This works for me and as I just post image or text only tumblr posts I decided to have them primarily shown on my blog and syndicated on tumblr so I could continue my involvement with the community there, a result of that has been the development of a tumblr plugin for wordpress so no I don’t believe that tumblr should be restricted to any one single idea, it is just another medium, channel of distribution, tool or what ever you choose to label it and I have used it in my own unique way just like many others have.

With all that said, I would like to see a trunication of posts in the dashboard so it doesn’t get clogged up with huge tumblrs, showing the first 300 or so words from the post with the option to view more would be useful and that was my original point although looking back I can see I didn’t put it across very well, or at all by the looks of it…

Say NO to long tumblr posts.

I’m slightly confused over why people feel the need to post long text posts in tumblr, don’t we have blogs for such things? I see tumblr as being the next stage up from twitter in the micro blogging world, where if a post is too short or too insignificant for a blog you post it to your tumblr. Maybe tumblr has moved on from this to become the next wordpress.com where people can come and host their blog advert free for free, either way I find it an annoyance to have my dashboard cluttered by excessively long posts. BTW I consider anything over say 300 words to be too long for tumblr, a post of that length really deserves to be posted to your blog. Then again, I could be wrong, would be nice to start a discussion on this subject.

Hey everyone, this is just a quick update to let people who visit here know that I haven’t abandoned you all but have instead been loaded with an amazingly huge amount of university work which has to come first on my list of priorities. I have emailed a ton of people back whom are interested in the tumblr wordpress plugin as well as the one I have written for zenphoto to wordpress, I shall be continuing with these plugins next week once I have handed in all the work I need to complete for this week. So yes, I am still active, just about and once I have the time I shall be back to regular posting soon.

With all that has been happening recently I have hardly had time to work on the tumblr-wordpress plugin, it is currently functional just not to an extent to which I feel happy about letting it loose to the wild Internet. By the time I am finished with it, it will automatically distinguish between normal text posts and image posts namely by searching the post for an image tag and then setting that image tags location as being the tumblr image post with any following text being the description. Keep on the look out for the first beta of the plugin being released soon, best ways is to subscribe to either my tumblr feed or my blog feed, in either case they are both the same thing
